Series Info

Beauty Pop is a manga series that was serialized in Japan's Ciao magazine from 2003 to 2008, running a total of ten volumes. The artist and writer is Kiyoko Arai. It is published in English by VIZ Media under the Shojo Beat label.

The manga is about the life of a naturally talented hairstylist named Kiri Koshiba and her problems with the Scissors Project (S.P.), a group of boys determined to become the best makeover team in Japan.

While the three members of the popular "Scissors Project" are known for giving elaborate makeovers to handpicked girls at school, they soon find an anonymous rival willing to give makeovers to brighten the lives of any girl who asks. Kiri Koshiba had no intention of revealing her talents as a hairstylist, but the Scissors Project is determined expose her and bring her into the world of hairstyling.

Beauty Pop is an upbeat manga series that pokes fun at the shojo genre while fitting happily inside it. The heroine, Kiri, is drastically different than the usual "niko-pachi" (eager/smiling sweetly) shojo manga heroine. She is unenthusiastic about the going-ons around her, and finds herself dragged into the world of the SP against her will. Despite her nonchalant attitude, however, Kiri proves to be an engaging and realistic heroine. The hijinks of the SP are funny, entertaining, and intriguing, and overall the series has a great flow to it. If you're looking for a different sort of shojo manga, Beauty Pop might just be the series for you.
