Hi everyone,

Sorry I haven't been on the board much in the last month, I was finishing my senior paper and the semester in general. I came back to find a bunch of new spam members and a spam post, which severely ticked me off. I put in the most spam-blocking security on this board that was available, and yet this keeps happening. I deleted the members who were very obviously spam, but I feel wary about deleting some of them because I can't tell if they're spam or just members with bizarre usernames.

So, if people could inform me if "members" with adult websites join or post spam messages so I can ban them? I'm going to try to be on here more over the break, but I can't guarantee perfection and I definitely want to keep this from getting out of hand.

Also, what are people's thoughts on making it a rule that newbies at least need to make an introductory post if they join to verify that they're real, or I'll delete their accounts? If that doesn't seem unfair, I may implement that.

~Lisa

I think that's a fair rule. That would not only help introduce a person, it would serve to show that they're not a spammer.

I'll be more than happy to start posting again. I've posted some, but I don't know where everybody left. I'll always be here, you can count on that.

yep, the user who created the Pills Post is a PHP Bot, it can track and locate stuff on either a nasty website, or a webservers database, if this is not the case, they have some nasty viruses and spyware on their computer, this person needs the boot. also a few of these ppl are database hackers and such. Check your PM's. i also agree they need to make an intro post. i have ways to see if they are bots. all is told through PHP Script.

btw word of advise DrPlloI and mrcaverta are both PHP bots, sorry to blow yous two's cover, but you need to go bye-bye. data hacking and spamming is not allowed here. :bwahaha:

Okay, I deleted all the members that I could tell were definitely SPAM. The people who looked like there was even the slightest possibility might be legit, I sent PMs to requesting that they post or PM me back. I'll give them until the end of the week before they're booted.

I also changed it so that all new members have to be approved by me before they can join. Hopefully, all these precautions will decrease the SPAM.

As always, keep me posted via PMs if you notice a problem!

So, how good i found this topic.

Closing open form is the effective to decrease spam, but it's crazy decreases users quantity. In my forum was NO spam, because it was fastly deleted. When the forum project was popular, we have 1-2 new users at week! Severaly they posted from 30 to 100 posts. I think, it's great for forum WITHOUT SPECIALIZATION. There was no current topics to discuss, only you creation!

Our guests dont know what we are good ones, we are interesting people and all that happened is life's necessarity =). I have tryed to register on you forum three weeks ago, and i simply not understanded what is going on. I HAVENT SEE A NOTE TOPIC, so my tryings was rejected. I think, it's the reason we have a little users. We must choose a moders. Or there is no future for our community. It will be sad... very sad.

I have been a one of the main moderators of a "aglobe" forum of cinema topic branch (if interested - http://aglobe.ucoz.ru/forum ;My nick is MikhailS there).

well you have to remember the K.F.U got hacked a few times + some of the spammer liked porn drugs and liked to post stuff about it ad's mainly... so yeah we kinda had to block this stuff... They where mainly PHP based bots that you see in MIRC chats. so yeah... You also have to keep in mind the ATLE was an 2001 movie and as much as i hate to say it, there are few Kida Fans left, mainly cause they have moved on, or have forgotten about it. (which is why i got a few new members on the forum a few years ago)

I went through tons of different precautions to try to prevent these spam users, and this is the only one that has worked. It's proven very effective at Genvid as well, which is where I got the idea to try it out. They have a note at the top of the page that explains how to register, but I haven't figured that hack out yet.

Nevertheless, since I closed the registration, we've had several good members join (Keran_Shadlag, JamieDory, oogiesean, Delalyra, and RifleExpert, of course). This form works best for me, so that's how we're going to keep it. It's the easiest way for me to moderate the goings on, and since this forum is on my domain, I'm going to go with what's easiest for me.

well the downtime was annoying along with the stress it put on the other members, we lost a few because of this also. so yeah. if people wanna be members, all the have to do is follow simple rules. not too hard.
