Blog fixed! | May 02, 2023 | 12:59 PM

Well, I promised "soon," but that didn't work out too well. In between trying to juggle other things, I've spent the last 3 years trying to find an alternative that would let me get the blog back in the state it had been before (an actual blog, one that allows comments, etc.), but I just couldn't find one. So I finally decided to bite the bullet and just switch to manual updates. This has the disadvantage of no comments and no ability to link to each individual entry, but it can't be helped. When (and I say when rather than if because I'm determined to make it happen) I get back to regularly updating here, I will likely make a mirror, either on Dreamwidth or Tumblr, that will allow commenting and I'll link to it each time I update here. Less than ideal, but it is what it is.

Monster High has made a comeback this year, both with a new "play" doll line and collector versions of the old style/continuity. I will be continuing to stick with the "old" continuity and doll style in this comic, as I have the whole storyline outlined already. As a reminder, it's based on the diaries that came with the dolls, with some modifications to smooth over inconsistencies (i.e. the fact that they abruptly decided to switch from Jackson/Draculaur to Clawd/Draculaura, and I wasn't about that) and some new storylines I dreamed up.

I alluded to this on my fanfiction blog, but my holdup in working on this and my other fanfic-stories has been multifaceted:

  1. The first thing that derailed this comic in particular was the construction that ruined a lot of the scenery I'd been using, as well as negatively impacted my concentration ability due to beep beep boom boom 24/7. This went on for over seven years, but it did finally wrap up in 2022. I am still going to have to figure out alternatives for the way I'd previously done the scenery, but I can at least hear myself think again.
  2. Health problems that turned chronic, including fibromyalgia. Basically, the activities that go along with creating this comic—setting up the displays, contorting myself to take the pics, and sitting at my computer for long spans—hurt really bad now. But over the last several years I've learned to manage these symptoms, and I would like to give it a try and see if I can make it work, even at a slower pace. But the chronic illness symptoms (especially brain fog) also impacted:
  3. Non-fanfic fiction writing. So yeah, I'm a writer for my day job too, and balancing writing novels with writing fanfic while chroniclaly ill has been... impossible, basically. But I'm wrapping up the last book in my flagship series and it should be done in the next few months. After that, I really want to take a break from writing and do some other stuff. It's been years since I've really been able to read, and even longer since I've been able to do things like fanfic. Once the series is done, I want to get back to that.

So that's where I'm at, why this "short" hiatus has turned into an unending one, etc. But this October will mark the ten year anniversary of the comic, so I'd love to get it going again for that! Watch this space.

Blog will be back soon! | January 08, 2020 | 7:40 PM

Just a quick status update to let you all know that my host upgraded my PHP version and my old hand-coded blog was no longer compatible. Never fear, the old blog posts have been backed up and I will get them back online as soon as I figure out an alternative. I don't really want to switch the site to Wordpress (though I will if need be), but there are other options out there. I could even just manually update the site.

I know it's been quite a long time since I updated with new pages, and I've been bad at status updates as well. I had talked about the disruptive construction that started behind my house, but that was honestly just an added stress to an overall much larger issue: my health. In the midst of working on Issue 3, I started experiencing some strange symptoms, and by the time I was partway through Issue 4, I could barely function. Five years seems like a long time, but when you're chronically ill, that time can go by so fast. And that's what I've finally come to understand that I am: chronically ill. Chronic fatigue, chronic pain, and a number of other symptoms that cause brain fog and memory issues made continuing to work on the comic really difficult.

That said, I really miss it. I miss the person I used to be, able to get involved in fandom and create stories. I miss fanfiction in general, but I especially miss the fun combination of story, photography, digital art, and crafting that went into working on this project. I want to get my life back. I know I'm never going to have the energy levels I had 6-7 years ago, but I want to hope that I can find a way to make it work. And now that the Monster High doll line has ended (meaning I don't have to worry about finding ways to incorporate new characters into the comic... which, I know I didn't really need to, but sometimes new characters were too cool to pass up), I feel liberated to focus on taking the dolls I do have and making their story my own.

I don't know when it will be, but I promise: Freaky Gone Fabulous is not over!

Comments temporarily disabled | January 02, 2017 | 9:41 AM

Hi everyone! I am still on hiatus, but once again, hiatus ≠ closed forever. FGF will be back, hopefully sometime this year as we are finally making some progress in the Battling The Construction front.

In the meantime, I have had to disable the comments for the time being because somehow spammers found their way past my anti-spam and I had 66 e-mails this morning with spam comments XD I am not sure what I will do long term to address this, but it probably will involve changing the site over to Wordpress, which will be a chore. At this time, old comments are still visible, you just won't be able to leave a new one. If you need to contact me, please use the e-mail button in the sidebar to the right. Thanks!

Okay, it has been a long hiatus | February 20, 2016 | 12:29 PM

Last May, I posted that I was taking a short hiatus - that has turned into quite a long hiatus, and I'm really sorry about that! Between my job, health and the mysterious eternal construction project going on in my backyard, a year can pass really quickly.

That doesn't mean I'm stopping the comic permanently, it just means I have much less time to work on it consistently. I have full scripts written, dolls set aside in order of issue, backdrops set up, and new ones for upcoming issues ready to go. It's just a matter of finding time to do it! I think the long-term goal is going to be to try to finish entire issues and uploading them in one go, without having a regular posting schedule. Kind of like my erratic fanfic-updating schedule. XD

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I'm not dead, and FGF isn't either. :-D

Hey ghouls, I am pretty swamped with deadlines at work for the next couple of months, and it is getting too difficult to juggle the comic and work (in case you couldn't tell by my sporadic posting schedule this month), so I'm going to take a little break until the end of April. I'm hoping I'll get some free time in the midst of this to take enough pictures to have a few extra pages when we come back in May, but at the very least, I should be able to get back on the regular posting schedule the first week of May. Thanks for understanding!
