About Sokka + Suki

Sokka and Suki have had a very interesting relationship. Although they had a rough start, they have grown to be close friends and even more. This page chronicles their relationship.

Their Meeting

Sokka and Suki met on the island of Kyoshi, while Sokka was visiting the island with the Avatar. Suki, the leader of the warriors who protect the island, and the other warriors ambushed the group and brought them to the main square for questioning. Sokka found it impossible to believe that a group of girls could possibly have beaten him in battle. He and Suki immediately clashed, as their ideas about the roles of men and the roles of women greatly differed.

Butting Heads

The next day, Sokka, still unnerved at being bested by a girl, decided to visit the warriors at their training facility. Apologizing for interrupting their "dance lesson" as the girls train with their heavy gold fans, Sokka inquires as to where he might go to get a little workout. Suki apologizes for having attacked the group the day before, explaining that she hadn't realized that it was the Avatar and his friends. Sokka accepts her apology, saying that "since you're a bunch of girls," he wouldn't hold a grudge. Suki arches her eyebrow, and invites the "big, strong man" to join her in a sparring match. She then proceeds to kick his butt, and he slinks off embarassedly.

Starting Over

Later, Sokka returns to the warriors' training area, this time to apologize. Humbly, Sokka asks Suki to teach him in the ways of a Kyoshi warrior. Reluctantly, Suki agrees to train him, providing he follow the customs of a Kyoshi warrior--including traditional dress and makeup. Together, the two train for several hours, at the end of which, Sokka manages to catch Suki off-guard and knock her to the ground. This causes the two to burst into another argument (albeit, a much more friendly one-- Suki:"I fell on purpose to make you feel better!" Sokka:"I got you! Admit it! I got you!"). Grudgingly, Suki admits that Sokka got a lucky shot in--and invites him to try it again.

Saying Goodbye

While Sokka and Suki continue their practicing (in a much friendlier way, if you catch my drift), the Fire Nation, led by Prince Zuko, attacks the island in search of the Avatar. Sokka and Suki spring into action, defending the island together as warriors of Kyoshi. However, the Fire Nation army proves too strong for the warriors to handle, and the Avatar decides that he and his friends need to leave in order to save the village. Sokka and Suki part, but not before Sokka apologizes for treating Suki like a girl instead of like a warrior. Suki kisses him on the cheek, and tells him, "I am a warrior...but I'm a girl, too." With that, the two part.

Sokka returns to the island of Kyoshi in episode 3 of Season Two, searching for evidence to prove the Avatar's innocence in a crime allegedly committed by one of his previous incarnations, the founder of Kyoshi Island. While there, Sokka asks about Suki's whereabouts, only to be informed that she and the other warriors have left to help with the war effort. Sokka looks disappointed; little does he know that he and Suki would be reunited before long...

Their Reunion

While attempting to board a ferry that will take them to the Earth Kingdom capital, Ba Sing Se, Sokka is intercepted by a security guard who seems to know exactly who he is--sarcastic, thinks he's hilarious, and is traveling with the Avatar. When Sokka confusedly asks the girl if he knows her, she responds with a kiss on his cheek. Sokka then realizes that the security guard is none other then Suki with her make-up off, and pulls her into a tight hug. Taking the opportunity to re-connect with her friends (and compliment Sokka on his muscles), Suki explains that after the Avatar's group left Kyoshi, the warriors had decided to join the war effort by escorting refugees to Ba Sing Se.

Protection

After a pregnant couple is denied passage on the ferry, the Avatar and friends decide to travel to Ba Sing Se on foot, via the Serpent's Pass, and escort the couple across. Suki decides to join the group and help them brave the difficult passage. Before long, however, it becomes apparent that Sokka is being more than just slightly overprotective of the warrior woman. He pushes her out of the way of falling boulders, scolds her for trying to sleep too close to a potentially unstable ledge, and blocks her from getting into her sleeping bag because he thinks he saw a spider.

Under the Moon

The reason for Sokka's overprotectiveness becomes clear as he and Suki talk beneath the moon. While in the North Pole, Sokka started seeing another girl--a princess named Yue. However, Princess Yue sacrificed her own life in order to become the Moon Spirit, and Sokka had been powerless to protect her. Not wanting to lose Suki as well, Sokka decided to devote all his strength to protecting Suki. Suki confesses that in the short time she had grown to know Sokka, she had begun to care about him very much ("I lost someone I care about. He didn't die; he just went away. I only had a few days to get to know him...but he was smart, and brave, and funny..."). The two lean in to kiss but, Sokka, perhaps aware of the fact that Yue, through the eyes of the moon, was watching them, pulls away, saying, "I can't."

The Kiss

The next day, when the group reaches the walls of Ba Sing Se, Suki says her goodbyes, explaining that she needs to return to the other Kyoshi warriors. She explains to Sokka that she only came along to ensure that he made it to Ba Sing Se safely; in essence, she was trying to protect him. She begins to apologize for the things she had said the night before, explaining that she got carried away with the moment, but Sokka leans in and kisses her, cutting her off. "You talk too much," he says, and the two kiss again before parting.

Not long after their parting, Suki and her warriors were attacked by Azula and Suki was taken prisoner...but fate decreed that she and Sokka would not be apart for long. (Third season details soon to come)
