HUH?! http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/princessandthefrog/Pharoah wrote:huh?
Have you really not heard of it? Disney's been promoting it like CRAZY for over a year now! It's their return to traditional hand-drawn animation after 5 years!
We saw a panel for it at Comic-Con. I'm afraid it just doesn't catch my interest. I'll probably see it and all, but I just don't know if I'll like it.
(Sorry. I guess part of it is knowing they only chose that story because the Disney parks wanted more stuff for their New Orleans sections. Kinda dampens it for me.)

To me, it doesn't matter WHY they chose the story as long as it's good. I understand that they originally wanted to do Atlantis partially because they wanted to re-do the submarines, but then the movie flopped so they didn't. I think that this movie looks great, so I really don't care what the motivations behind it were.

Domestically, it did very poorly financially (it didn't even make back its production cost). The reason they made a "sequel" was because they were planning to make a TV series in anticipation that it would do well, but it didn't, so they took the 3 completed episodes and strung it together, hoping to cut their losses. That's also the reason they wound up doing Finding Nemo on the subs instead of Atlantis.
This isn't to say I don't like Atlantis, the existence of this forum and my myriad of websites should attest to that. But it was one of the least successful Disney movies from that 15-year span and is generally (and in my opinion, unfairly) considered one of the black sheep of the Disney franchise, along with Hunchback and the Black Cauldron.
